Piano

for saxophone, percussion, e-guitar, accordion, piano and tape (2023/2024)

There is a great deal of potential in terms of sound and beat when combining saxophone, drums, electric guitar, accordion and piano. It prompts me to take on the basic idea, already relevant for other works, to make the inner sound and noise of this instrument – the piano – so large, in both senses of the word, and translate it to the given instrumentation. The physical magnitude of a grand piano, the countless and diverse possibilities for playing upon it, and its musicologically-relevant and quite long established piano repertoire tradition, add to the weight of this distinct content. Conversely, I add the second meaning of the concise word as a possible contrast. Piano, abbreviated to a mere p laconically conjures dynamics, and as a performance instruction indicates, plainly and simply, softly. Nonetheless, the performer is left an immense amount of leeway in its implementation. So, it is the interpretation of the term, together with the wonderful combination of instruments, that inspired me to form music out of such versatile sonic material.
